    Description

    Hello,

I've tried installing Scripts 4.8 with both the EA App and Steam versions of the game. When the game loads the character models are fine but the terrain textures are missing. The ground is just a brown featureless expanse and characters float above walls that don't appear.

If I load the game without scripts then everything appears normal.

I have tried adding W3D launcher and using it's link to install scripts but with the same outcome.

    Reproduction Steps

    1. Install game either steam or EA
    2. Install scripts
    3. Launch single player then either tutorial or campaign.

    Windows 11 Home 23H2

Installed on Samsung SSD 980 Pro

    NVIDIA Geforce RTX 4090

    Intel i9-13900K

    64GB RAM

If any other info is required please let me know.

Thanks in advance for any advice/help

@ Cloister56  Hello, and welcome to W3D-Hub. It is unfortunate that you are having issues, but maybe we can figure this out. This is a new type of issue that I have personally not heard of before when simply adding the scripts package to Renegade. Let's try something - Go to the Tiberian Technologies website and download an older version of the scripts package. Try version 4.7 or 4.6 for example, and let us know if the same behavior continues.

Could you also include some screenshots or even video of this phenomenon you are experiencing?

    Thanks

    Hello,

    Thank you for your reply.

The weirdest thing happened. I downloaded the next newest version (4.8 update 2 -8929), I had to launch the game from game2.exe otherwise it kept trying to update to the newest version. Initially the result was the same, textures not loading.

I had to quit the game to remind myself how to take a screenshot in windows 11 (print screen isn't the default any more) and when I reloaded the game the textures loaded normally.

So I then allowed it to update scripts via the launcher and again when I launched the game the textures loaded fine.

So I cannot share a screenshot of the problem any more as it seems to have disappeared. I've tried uninstalling, reinstalling both in steam and the EA app version and the scripts applies and works without issue. (This is a good outcome, but I feel a bit of a fraud I cannot demonstrate the problem I was having)

The only thing I noticed is when I launched the 4.8 update 2 -8929 version, the second command prompt like screen seemed to take longer. When the same screen came up on the 4.8.3 version it is only up for a second but I did see the words "file or location not found"

Is there something with the newer version that meant it did not find the texture files to update and when I used an old version as you suggested that these files were updated? I would have assumed all the files would be deleted when I uninstall so not sure why I can go straight to the new version now.

So in summary your suggestions has fixed things, thank you.

If you want me to try anything else to see what might have happened please let me know.

Interesting. The Scripts update alone will not change any texture files, as it is only an update to the game's engine files. However, we do perform integrity checks on the asset files (textures, sounds, models, etc), and if any integrity violations are found (corruption basically), then those will be automatically repaired by the program that runs in the command window that you mentioned seeing.

I'm not sure what to think about this honestly, as I've never heard of this particular issue as you have described it. It sounds like whatever it was, was automagically repaired though, so that is good. And no worries, I totally believe you. This is far from being the most outlandish bug that has been reported. If you encounter anything else, please don't hesitate to report it! The W3D engine has built-in screenshot functionality as well, so all you have to do is press the Print-Screen key on your keyboard and it will place the screenshot files into the Renegade folder in your Documents folder (or under the name of whatever other W3D game you may otherwise be playing).

    Thanks :)

Thank you for your reply and help.
I checked the folder you mentioned and there was a screenshot from when I had the issue.
But so far everything seems fixed and I'm enjoying running through the campaign.

Aha! I did not properly understand what you were trying to describe, so I'm glad you found this screenshot. The textures are not what are missing, but rather the models! The brown you see there is the sky beyond. I have seen this before, several times over the years, but I am not sure what causes it.

This happens when the map depends on assets from the original game and mostly happens in Co-Op servers which host campaign maps. Running "mixcheck.exe" in the game folder might solve the issue by downloading the missing maps.
