  1. On the RAlism thing, I imagine that the MP5 was developed out of a need for a lightweight, cheap, and effective SMG. It was so effective that it was upgraded slightly and distributed across all Allied nations once RA2 rolled around. And in the Tiberium timeline, many set out to combine the accuracy and firepower of the M16 with the compact design, reliability, and low cost of the MP5. The winner, of course, was the GAU-3 "Eliminator."

    While this is plausible, personally I'd do some minor modifications to the model to make it resemble early versions of the MP5, such as straightening the magazine and texturing some vents onto the handguard: hkmp5.1.jpg

     

    These modifications are easily done and would distinguish it from AR's MP5, as well as making it more appropriate for the time period and showing visible developments in the years between RA/APB and RA2/AR.

  2. Am I the only one who likes it that the Rocket Soldier and RPG Trooper are still available after the barracks is destroyed?

    I like it too, but if the Redeye/Strela actually has longer range than a Destroyer or Missile Sub, then this could be a problem. All that should be needed though is giving them the same range, just so a $300 weapon doesn't render a $1500 warship essentially useless.

    Funnily enough, I actually advocated for a different breed of SMG when talking with GeneralCamo about this. I wanted something like the Sterling or the MP40, but he made the very good point that nobody here would be willing to model it, especially when we have an MP5 laying around that wouldn't look out too out of place. The compromise was that I "roughen" up the texture (to differentiate it from AR and make it more in line with APB's art style) and we all go home happy. And, having played with it ingame for a while, I don't really want it to change.

     

    Fair point. Still, if I could pick any SMG for the medic, it'd probably be the Walther MPL; A rather unique and little-known weapon which is slightly older than the MP5, yet not an overused WWII weapon either, and still being quite fitting for RA/APB. Plus IMO it looks pretty cool.

The point of allowing basic infantry after destruction of the barracks was to alleviate the issue of a team becoming completely helpless and open to killwhoring once their barracks and war factory go down. It gives the team something to fight back with while still punishing them for letting the building die (no more engies or commandos or advanced infantry).

     

    If the Soviet team in that case was camping their sub pen and killing all the Allied ships, the Allies could have switched tactics and attacked with tanks or other means.

    Giving the medic a submachine gun is an interesting choice, we'll have to see how it plays out. However, an MP5 doesn't really seem like the best choice for APB, especially since it already will feature prominently in AR. IMO it would be better to have a Sterling or something similarly vintage (if someone were to model it, that is).

     

    Personally, I think that the MP5 is a good choice, but I'd prefer the MP5A2 or the MP5F...maybe even the original HK54. Also, due to the ROF on the silenced baretta, I feel like that could be changed to an MP5SD with a shortened clip. Essentially, the medic needs a fixed buttstock.

     

    Personally I'd much rather see a Sterling or MAT-49, or an MP34 or MP40, but that's just me.

  7. If you go about that way then make primary weapons of both do no damage to aircraft, and give them both the same anti-craft only weapon as a secondary.

    IMO this kind of approach should be avoided whenever possible. Having weapons that arbitrarily do no damage to something which they logically should damage (explosive missiles and large-caliber bullets somehow not damaging aircraft? :?) and having too many hard counters is rather jarring and poorly-suited to APB. Besides, both sides have numerous ways of dealing with enemy aircraft, so do the Longbow and Hind even need to be perfectly balanced against each other when they don't even fill the same role (anti-armour interceptor vs anti-infantry gunship), simply because they're currently the only aircraft?

  8. Thanks for the heads-up. Do you have any suggestions for how I should set up the faces on the buildings? Considering these are specifically for W3D projects.

     

    Also I rounded out the surface of the lights a bit. I think I can consider this model finished. Now I just need to unwrap and texture it.

  9. Here are some initial shots of the wireframes. Each building is currently divided into 3 objects: Exterior, interior, and roof. This is early WIP so there are still a lot of n-gons and other stuff to sort out. One of my main learning goals is being able to model buildings efficiently, in the sense of poly usage and minimizing waste/redundancy, as well as being easy to work with and modify as needed.

  10. Hi everyone,

     

    Recently I've been learning how to model for the W3D engine and I just thought I'd show some of the projects I'm working on. If anyone has feedback/suggestions regarding methods or other related subjects, that is always appreciated. While I currently only have a basic knowledge of modelling, I want to expand my skills into many different aspects of modelling, including buildings, maps, people, and other complex objects.

     

    With that said, I'll start with a (very) early WIP of some city buildings I'm working on:

    These are intended to be used in a map which I plan to make in the near future, but I'm also using these as a learning experience to improve my skills and methods, so any feedback will be greatly appreciated! :cheers:

  11. Hi everyone, I'm Ice. Some of you will know me from the BHP forums as APB_ICE. I signed up at W3DHub quite a while ago but haven't posted yet, so I figured I should at least say 'Hi'. :v

     

    For those whom I haven't met yet, I'll say a few things about myself: I've been a long-time fan of C&C and am a huge fan of APB, Reborn and AR, all of which I've been following for years. My interests include outdoor activities, airsoft/paintball, history, fishing, camping, and of course, gaming (well, when I have the time at least; I currently work 2 jobs lol). Recently I've gotten into 3D modelling and related fields (texturing, animation) and I'm learning a lot, so I'll probably make a thread about my various projects soon.

     

    You'll see me on the W3D servers a fair bit and I look forward to getting to know everyone here. See you on the battlefield!
