120k euros/year. I run my own game development company (mobile games)

Keyword RUN lol, keep in mind that starting a company costs money, and there is always a chance that people won't like what you make, thus meaning its a complete loss.

But yeah in general managers make far more money.

Hehe. Having some fortune in bitcoin surely didn't hurt as it allowed me to hire some people full time. Most of my profit goes straight back into the company.

Crowdfunding is an option. But ofcourse is no gaurantee for success. Having a good idea, execution, virality and a bit of luck is what it comes down to.

My company is basically a hobby that grew out of proportions. I don't have any degree in game design whatsoever.

  2. I'd hate for all of the hard work people put into projects like TSR to be for nothing. Finished project = happy creators, unfinished project = sad creators (and players too!).

I think most of the people here feel a strong nostalgia to Westwood era games. Imagine yourselves in a few years wanting to go back to all those memories. You'll want to play the crap out of these W3D games again, that's for sure, but you'll be sad you never gave them the form and polish they deserved and it will be way too late to work on them later in the future with countless new issues to deal with. And that lingering sadness will always stay with you. So heads high and get to work! After that, see about moving to more modern solutions IF that idea truly strikes your (C&C?) passion in the right spot.

I know I'm new here, but I'll stay and play as long as there is someone to play with.

Obviously a UDK/UE4 version would not be ready tomorrow. It takes up to 2-3 years to have something playable... which my guess is the lifespan W3D has left. There's no need to abandon W3D. But it would be wise to have something ready for when the curtain falls on W3D.

  3. Are you as polite as the other wolf? I mean poklite? Polite with a "K"? And underscore? Badass.

Hey, this map does look neat, and the more the merrier amirite?

So, how come this map wasn't included? Wheres a detective when yah need one?

Yeh, it even had the breaking ice thingy when tanks drove over it. Everything was backed up on the FTP iirc.

    Very good feed back man.

    She's a she, FYI.

Kai has always been excellent at picking out balance points, and finding excellent ways to fix them too. She actually has positions elsewhere in the C&C community, hence why I know her personally. We also played Team Fortress 2 once or twice.

Whatever happened to the newer versions of my maps? They fixed alot of things. Especially Snow and Isles

I think they were lost around the time you decided to make maps in the 3.4.4 editor, which broke everything.

Nothing was broken. I had them running in game without any issues. Someone else must have screwed something up....

  5. Personally I don't have any nostalgia for w3d, it holds no special meaning or memory to me, but I pragmatically accept it for what it is when playing. The only reason I'm here is because I want to play an FPS game about Red Alert 2 and Tiberian Sun. Seeing how slow development here is though I'd cautiously recommend moving to a newer engine, not for graphics, but for a more modern and user-friendly toolset and tutorials/support, which would mean faster and therefore more energetic development, and for the appeal to new developers. Again personally, I toyed with the idea of spending time learning the use of the w3d editing suite, but in the end was persuaded against it by the age and nichey-ness of the engine, deciding my time was better spent honing skills I think would be more useful to me later on. This is my own personal perspective, but it means that at least one potential developer was turned off by the engine itself.

    This.

UDK is a breeze compared to W3D. I'm sure very few people , if any, are willing to invest time into learning the ins and outs of such an outdated engine. Gmax sucks, 3Dmax8 requires pirating and plugin workarounds. LE can drive people insane with random crashes and weird bugs.

Add to this UDK's massive userbase and many of the gameplay mechanics already being in place incase you decide to base it off RenX (mod toolset to be released next month)...

Problem is the "new" generation of gamers and players dont know Tiberian Sun.. And redo the whole work of Reborn needs much time, with this lowpoly models of Reborn you can completly restart the whole mod in UDK.. so what i would try to tell you, if they change to UDK the whole work of reborn mod was for nothing... just to be realistic.. so i understand why they wont

The flipside is that Reborn won't attract any new players using this engine. The outcome long term will be worse than switching over to UDK. Losing all players and devs.

Have you considered how many players cookie clicker and other free games are drawing? They are not on UDK either.

Sure, but they have a much broader appeal than renegade's CnC mode. FPS games tend to be judged on graphics, regardless of how good the gameplay is. There are exceptions but not many.

CnC mode is niche, sadly. Even among FPS games.

I guess it's also impossible to put W3D games on steam.

Why not move to UDK? W3D is dead

Welcome, are you staying around long? (honestly asking btw)

Depends on how much stuff there is to leak. ;D

W3D doesn't interest me anymore... you should contact the RenX team and see if you can get your hands on their code. This place seriously needs some UDK love. Otherwise it'll be dead on arrival.

Port stuff to UDK, publish some fancy ads, attract new folks and so on
