So, anyways, we know iLTS is suspicious, and we know he has lynch protection, so obviously if nothing else, we're going to get rid of that. :v

I mean... I just have to use it if I'm actually in danger of getting lynched. I'm far from your best target too. I'm gonna have to reread the chatter for this day, but I think there are plenty of people who are actually suspicious.

Not wanting to die is not suspicious in and of itself :v

TBH I don't expect Louis to have useful info, but really, for the game state, I hope she did SOMETHING last night or we have way to many people immobile, or claiming to be immobile.

If you want to make a list of people who are "mobile" you can add me to that list. I just don't have anything of use to add right now.

If I wanted a degree that would require me to live in math land, I would have chosen economics.

I said "screw math" and became a self-taught developer/architect instead. In my own experience, math is not a requirement for software development (comp sci is another story though).

Some places do N0 where all actions except killing are allowed.

I have thought about that, but I think it'd have to be more than just killing. Removing the primary tool of the mafia, without doing anything to "nerf" town can make town too powerful.

To be fair, that's more of an issue with CYOR than most other setups IMO. Getting killed off before you get to use a cool role you took time to design is less fun than getting killed off before using a role baked into the setup and randomly assigned to you. I think that's part of why D1 NoLynch is a part of our meta; we play a ton of CYOR.

For me personally it's both. In CYOR I'm of course excited to try out some crazy role, but I'm still primarily here for the scheming, deception, and logic.

What would infection mean in a mafia game? Delayed kill?

That would be my first thought. A cult is also possible or some other debuff.

@Retaliation As an aside, I've been trying to think of something open source to make for the past month, hit me up if you (or anyone else here) do dev work and are interested in contributing. I'm thinking a .NET based web service/server for hosting forum/text games.

Actually, let me take a moment here to state a meta point:  Yeah, stats show D1 a mafia almost never gets voted, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try, both because of the small chance that you DO hit a mafia, and two because votes give info.  This is OVERWHELMINGLY the concensus among mafia/werewolf players.  That's why people hate D1 no lynch so much, and it's so bizzare that's our meta here (though our meta here is fine).

Since we're talking about all this, I think the biggest weak point of the mafia formula is D1/N1. There's not as much "mafia" content D1 as other days, it tends towards a bunch of shitposting with the occasional D1 gambit (especially on these forums). Statistically, 1-2 people are going to be knocked out of the game by the time D2 starts. Those people got excited enough for a mafia game to signup and their roles required more work from the GM to balance and design. Then it's all gone without any chance to really participate from those who got killed.

D1/N1 is inefficient as typically designed from a gameplay view. I'm not 100% sure how to fix it, my last CYOR with the multiple characters was kind of an experiment in seeing how that could be changed up. But it's a major bummer (especially to new players) to get killed before the real fun stuff happens. I do want to run another game at some point (should have the time within a couple months) so I'm open to any ideas anyone has to change that up.

I mean, just because I use stats doesn't mean I'm locked into one way of thinking.  I'm a notorious gambler too, after all.

    I guess I should clarify, I don't think you're doing anything "anti-fun" lol

But going "statistically... :eng101:" and arguing for voting random just on a statistical analysis of all votes sounds anti-fun to me.

    You should Asimov's Foundation series.

One of the best science fiction series imo.

I personally play games to blow of steam and relax from work/real life. It's why I've turned down chances to do anything competitively in games. Once you get into that, the goal isn't to have fun it's to win and earn a prize. Statistical analysis of matches, units, weapons, etc can be eye opening and show you a better way to play (maybe even the best way). But I enjoy figuring that out through my own trial and error, and using options that feel fun rather than ones that are the most effective.

Same goes for Mafia, it's just another game for me. I like trying out new things, going for crazy gambits/strats, and just seeing how I can have fun.

I mean, I have a degree with a stats component, so I statify everything.

Statistical analysis can be very informative in a lot of things, it's incredibly useful. But I just find it sucks the fun out of stuff if you use it to try and "solve" a game. :v

I'm reminded of the time on Mafia Universe where someone argued, and showed statistical proof, that voting randomly is better than doing actual case work.

    He was Mafia.

My champs game, the setup, everyone vanilla in a 15 player game except 2 JOATs.  D1 one player is like "optimal strategy is for both Joats to claim and protect eachother to form town core"  He also claims JOAT (and was one).  A townie fake claims joat.  Actual second JOAT flips the hell out and we're in a mess.

aka not having fun playing a game

Why are you insisting on this path of claiming to know how an action works? I don't see any reason why it couldn't also be a roleblock. There is nothing that says actions must have only one effect.

There's a lot it could be and I agree we don't know enough to be certain yet.

    1. Dual effect action
    2. Action that flips a coin between roleblock or a kill
    3. Action failed to kill, silent roleblock was used on Shade
    4. Something else entirely

Yeah they started mafia and ended up pvp forum RPGs.

I wish there was (or I knew about) some software that helped with the complexity and updating that has to constantly happen during those. I'd try to do some myself, but it's so much work for what often ends up as a worse game of mafia.

I could probably write something like that. I haven't done anything with gaming throughout my professional career, but I do a lot with industrial networking/communication and distributed services. i.e. something that players could send their actions to and it would validate everything.

If somebody wanted to pay for it, it shouldn't be that difficult to host as a website for the front end. Might even be possible to do it for free on AWS.

I honestly can't believe we played like 5 games of deadspace. I can only remember bits of one or two.

I think I only played the first two, just didn't have time for the later games. Those were Verti's first RPG style games, right?

I was already considering doing such a thing, running a Ghost Trick game again with alterations.

I forgot about that one. I thought that was one of the most fun I've played.

I've thought about doing something like Pulp Novel Chicago mafia again.

Like Dead Space gets touted as the HOLY GRAIL of Mafia that's ever been held here and I missed it :colbert:

    All hail necromorph Isaac!

I don't think I could ever top that game, so that's why I don't reuse that in a CYOR.

  16. Just now, OrangeP47 said:

That is another possibility I raised, and honestly classical flavor could point to that more maybe.  That's a fairly common mechanic... elsewhere... I don't think we've ever done it here though.

In all honesty, something kinda like that was one of the ideas I had for this CYOR. But I wanted to do something I've absolutely never done before, so Impostor it was.
