I'd forgotten about that Futurama episode
I'll probably end up going to see this at the cinemas even if it does look like an epic cheese fest, I have an unlimited card for the local cinema anyway Who knows, it might even be really good, although I suspect it's not going to get the same kind of following as Tron.

See, it's not just W3D that requires epic bodges to make things work!

Anyone seen the trailer for Pixels? Just saw it myself, can't decide if awesome or just cheesy :/
Edit: trailer added!

That view will move onto the home tab in a future update and there won't be a "no game" mode

A new updated to the W3D Hub launcher has been released today and will be offered to you via auto-update when you next start the launcher.
New features include;
- Per-game news is now displayed when you have a game selected in the "Games" tab. This is still a work in progress and it needs a fair bit of work to make it look nice and improve its functionality
- All games are now listed in the launcher, regardless of whether they've been released or not. This allows you to browse the news for those games in the same way as for released games.
- When viewing a game which is not yet released a notification bar will appear at the top of the news indicating that the game is not released
- The launcher will automatically check for game updates in the background without requiring a restart. When an available update is found the update icon will be shown on the game logo on the left hand side
- Misc. bug fixes and improvements, such as an improved diagnostics.log file

We never went anywhere Problem was that so much stuff has been happening internally that every time we got the news post almost ready to publish we had more stuff to add and it went through another editing cycle!
We'll try to avoid that in future and post news more regularly going forward, even if it means we miss out the very latest, last minute developments (after all, that's what the next news post is for, right? )

Lets take this back to basics. What are your design goals for
a) How teaming should work
You mentioned mutants earlier, do you intend to have all player play at the mutant faction (FYI, we don't have "mutant GDI" and "mutant Nod", only "mutants" in general, who are called the "forgotten"). Give us a better idea of what you want to do and we can suggest ways to make it happen.
b) The Obelisk
Is it intended to be neutral, and thus hostile to both teams? Or is it owned by one team at a time? What should a team do to make it friendly / neutral towards them? Should it remain friendly / neutral forever? Until the enemy do something? For a limited amount of time?
c) Any other special features you want to implement.
I think some of the dicussions in here thus far are missing the context required to give the right answers

You can't make the obelisk capturable until we get it re-rigged as a stationary turret style vehicle instead of a building (in terms of engine logic)
That has been on the backburner for quite some time (since it will also allow us to make it stop shooting at jumpjets etc)

Yeah, because anonymous edited worked "great" for ECW about the time the bots found it.
Didn't take them long either, the damn thing isn't even public yet and I've already had to password protect the directory until someone with wiki access fixes it

Tsr is copying the AR HUD now? Wouldn't it be better to design an actual tsr themed HUD?

Fibre to the cabinet and copper to the house

The launcher is built on .NET 4.0 using WPF for the user interface. It generally follows an MVVM design pattern, although I'm not religious about sticking to it too rigidly if there is a better way to implement something.
At present the launcher source is only available to W3D Hub staff members via our Git repository and is unlikely to ever be open source for various reasons.
I am however planning to open source a lot of the supporting library code, especially the code that deals with W3D file manipulation and whatnot.
The backend APIs that the launcher interfaces with are written in PHP and use JSON to pass data back and forth. These APIs are closed source.

You also need to consider copyright. C%C is owned by EA, making C&C games on a non EA (and non C&C) engine leaves us even more vulnerable to the EA legal department deciding they don't like what we're doing.
I also love how people assume that a new engine would make things faster. We'd probably have to spend several years customising any other engine before we even started porting the games properly, with nothing being released to the public at all. New engine is not some kind of magic bullet go faster stripe

If anyone comes across more things like this (extensions you can't upload, images that won't post etc) be sure to flag them up so we can look into whether we can support them

But surely your hands end up covering up most of the screen trying to control your character, to the extent that you can't actually see what you're doing?

It specifically supports steam screenshots only

I'm not really sure how you'd even play an FPS game on a mobile phone....

Added a media tag, now just paste the URL into a post without any [ img ] or [ url ] etc tags and you get;

We can probably add a media tag to support that actually if you give me the full URL

Somewhat off topic, but the lighting in the screenshot you posted looks really over-saturated, far too bright in many places. Obviously hard to judge lighting from a single perspective though.
As for engine comparisons... it really doesn't matter all that much in the long run, good gameplay is far more important than pretty graphics, although pretty graphics do help!

FYI, the "About" tab on the homepage at w3dhub.com also has information about the lawnchair

What engine are you going to build this on?
Are structures going to be pre-fab'd (and potentially you could add new pre-fabs with mods) or self-build a-la minecraft? pre-fab would probably be easier if you want to give buildings functions and whatnot.

One of the founding values of W3D Hub was to increase the openness of our development process and get the community more involved with the work we're doing, not just on the games but the tools and infrastructure surrounding them.
As such I've decided to create this topic to see how interested our community are in the development of the launcher and see what feedback you might have on features as they're being developed. If there is a positive response to this I will consider doing more of these for the launcher and other non-game related W3D Hub projects.
Anyhow, with the blurb out of the way, here are some very early WIP screenshots of a new feature for the launcher, namely the ability to download news from the website.
The current plan is for each game to list its own news items individually and also provide a combined "all news" (including community news not shown under any game tab) on the "Home" page of the launcher.
One of the first issues I realised we had was that we could only show you news for TSR with the way the launcher worked before - only showing you the games you were allowed to install. That has been changed now so that all games will be listed, allowing you to browse their latest news. Part of this change was adding a new "this game is not available yet" banner to the top of the game page for those games which are not yet released. This is shown in the screenshot below;
For games that are released the page looks like this;
The design and theming work for this is still very early WIP, some of the things that need adding are;
- Date of the news post
- Replacing the "i in a box" icon with an image themed to the news post (this will also go onto the w3dhub.com website homepage, which uses the same backend service to download news items)
- Improved text formatting
- A link to read the complete news article online
We're interested to hear what you, the community, would like to see from this feature and hear any suggestions or other feedback you might have. Let us know your thoughts
Also, let me know what you think about seeing future WIP updates on our tools and services. Is this something you'd like to see more of? Is there anything in particular you'd like to know more about?
