Launcher suggestions and bug report

Here's a few suggestions I have for the launcher:

 

  • Have an Update button for the individual games rather than having to attempt joining an existing server to update a game.
  • Have an Uninstall button for the individual games, rather than having to remove them manually, which I feel dirty when doing :p
  • Have an uninstaller for the W3D Hub Launcher itself (I thought it had one before?).

 

Also, the last version of APB I had was 3.0.2.0, and yesterday I tried to update several times. It kept failing either at installing the always.dat itself (???) or an intermediary update (3.0.2.1 or such). The launcher would either say it failed or crash completely.

 

Now I've Shift+Del'd the entire W3D Hub folder (because I couldn't find its uninstaller) and installed it again. I'm trying to install APB, and it's already found the files it downloaded before, but it fails to install always.patch.3.0.1.0.zip. What gives?

There is for the two I put in bold. Go to the games section of the launcher and click on the monitor like icon. That's where you'll find the uninstaller/update/repair options.

Thought that button was related to the news feed somehow, wasn't quite intuitive to me...

 

Still nothing prevents the crash when an always.dat patch needs to be applied (it's 3.0.4.1, sorry)

I guess I can agree with making the update and uninstall buttons slightly larger/more obvious. I've never had trouble finding them though. As for uninstalling the launcher, its just a single self-contained executable in programfiles\w3dhub so an uninstaller that deletes a single file wouldn't be worth much to me :p

 

As far as your issues with updating you'll just need to delete your "C:\ProgramData\W3D Hub\Launcher\package-cache\games\apb" folder. Should do the trick. If not, let me know!

 

Also check the help forum and more specifically this thread if nothing I suggest helps.

As for uninstalling the launcher, its just a single self-contained executable in programfiles\w3dhub so an uninstaller that deletes a single file wouldn't be worth much to me :p

As far as I know it creates some registry entries too, so...

Right, I forgot about those. But aren't those actually for the games and not the launcher itself?

As far as your issues with updating you'll just need to delete your "C:\ProgramData\W3D Hub\Launcher\package-cache\games\apb" folder. Should do the trick. If not, let me know!

Did that, everything downloaded afresh. Got a crash when always.patch.3.0.2.1.zip had to be installed. :gonk:

May it have something to do with some of these registry keys pointing to the Bluehell Productions folder that doesn't exist?

I hope the launcher can see more development done to it. Ideally I'd like to see it replace the old in-game menu you can access by clicking "single player", and be more user friendly as well as more graphically interesting.

 

The launcher is the first thing people see when wanting to try any W3D project, it needs to do a better job selling that initial experience, in all ways imaginable.

 

Unfortunately these things cost time from select few people here that can actually contribute to it.

I actually like having the in-game menu and feel it's an essential part of the Red Alert nostalgia. To see it ever go would be really sad and would kill part of APB's connection to RA1, IMO. Plus it's important to have as an alternate way to access the game for people who, for one reason or another, have problems getting the launcher to work, or simply prefer not to use it for whatever reason.

Agreed. Besides, I don't understand how having a standard menu isn't user-friendly. Nobody complained on them back then, either.

 

It's difficult to customize due to various things being hard coded when it comes to the W3D user interface. That's how the launcher (any launcher) came to exist, as a way to work around that.

 

Besides, when I said the launcher needs to be more "graphically interesting", I meant pretty much what the old game menu tried to do, but with more development control. There is no reason the launcher eventually wouldn't be able to change appearance based on the selected W3D project, in APB's case, to resemble the classic RA menu, with the needed shine and polish.

 

Functionality-wise there isn't anything the in-game menu can do that an external program like a launcher could not, but the in-game menu on the other hand, is much more restricted. You won't be able to really add features to it like W3D project browsing or a chat lobby. Which comes back to my point, the launcher could easily make the in-game menu obsolete with sufficient development contribution.
