GameFront / Filefront is CLOSING DOWN
AZ-Stalker replied to AZ-Stalker's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
I haven't started yet since my storage is overflowing. I've set aside a whole day or two in the following week to do what I can and I'll be targeting less popular filefronts such as certain Novalogic sections, The Movies, the STALKER series and some other stuff to start with. I've been checking up on what to leave to others such as the Battlefront stuff which already has an operation under way. I'm more or less still freeing up space. Not sure what to target regarding C&C yet. Will look into Jedi Knight things as well and anything else I see myself needing for older games, the good stuff in any case. Dawn of War too. -

If you're running low on storage space like me make sure to start reuploading them to ModDB or wherever. -

Any news or anything to report from anyone? We have a bit over a week left so just bumping this up. -
Thank you for the kind words and for taking the time to send the TSR team some extra motivation coming from a true fan! Everyone is really trying hard not to dissapoint with the new TSR, so the wait will be well worth it, I'm sure! Oh and TSR is my favorite W3D game as well.
-
I don't have a good answer to give you Justas_Prime since I'm not involved with the majority of TSRs update operations, but what I can say is that you could always take a brake from the game and not quit it entirely if the wait is getting too long for you. It would be a real shame if you were to not return just because volunteer game developers are having a tough time getting things fixed up in a decent amount of time. We're all here when we can, everyone sacrifices free time to work on these games in one way or another. W3D Hub will continue to work on their games and since APB has taken the spotlight and stress off of TSR's shoulders as the flagship game, developers can now finally take the time to make TSR the great game it deserves to be. When you count in the volunteer / spare time aspect into this, there's really no way to go faster than circumstances dictate. But considering how good APB turned out to be, TSR will probably be able to match that kind of quality if given enough love - so be patient and believe in W3D Hub. Try not to give up because of short-term motivations, because in the long run, after everything everyone is putting into TSR 2.0, I'm sure you'll be happy to have waited along with us to see it take the spotlight alongside APB. So, in conclusion of my own limited viewpoint, you can't put a clear "how long will it take" timeline for a project run by volunteer contributors. Real life can step in at any point and ruin anything we might tell you... lets say I tell you that TSR will be ready in 2 months (ONLY AS AN EXAMPLE) and then something happens to some of us working on the game and that approximation gets blurry and it takes even longer. There is no real way to give you a straight answer other than to approximate which could eventually lead to more disappointment. So what I do is help out where I can, spread motivation and hope for the best. Things are moving forward with each passing day, and that's a great news for anyone waiting on TSR 2.0! So stay strong and hope for the best!

Links to the episodes on the now defunct GR forum don't lead anywhere. Please check out the few comics I've made at Zee's site from now on everyone: http://zeehive.net/tiberian-daylight/

GameFront / Filefront is CLOSING DOWN
AZ-Stalker replied to AZ-Stalker's topic in Off-Topic Discussion
Okay, so I know a lot of the popular stuff like Battlefront's filefront files are beign taken care of, but I've yet to see an internet wide checklist of who is actively working to preserve what. The closest I've seen is Plokite_Wolf's WIP list. If anyone finds such an overview so we can see what less popular filefronts known communities still haven't taken care of, that would be appreciated. Any info if the old Elder Scrolls filefronts are getting saved by anyone? I also have to either check or do it myself for the STALKER games, The Movies and Delta Force titles like Joint Operations. Oh and Company of Heroes stuff like older patches PRIOR to when they removed LAN (argh!). -

I'm in a tough position where I don't have a lot of extra storage space but need tons of stuff from Battlefront 2, Dawn of War, C&C, the STALKER series, Joint Operations... crap. I really hope people other than the few of us come through and just rehost the whole thing somewhere. We really need a site like filefront where you can look up and share these things as a central modding point. I think that if nobody remembers to backup things like classics such as The Movies, all of that good game addon stuff might be lost and then there will be no finding them in the future. -

Considering ModDB is giving the option to send them things we recover for them to continue hosting them as far as I understood them, we have some options on the table. The big secondary objective is to spread this around as much as possible, make sure everyone knows whats happening if you have friends or are in communities around the web. Don't hesitate because this is really only one chance to save as much as we can. 15 days remaining. I've set a whole day aside to search through every filefront I used to use and grab as much stuff I hold dear as I can. I guess that's also true for W3D games with older versions of maps and assets probably being uploaded around there. Whatever your cases might be - help everyone out. -

I've sent a quick note of this to CNCNZ.com as well. Hopefully everyone chips in. Not just regarding old C&C maps and mods, but a lot of the other games too. It's like we're loosing a big chunk of gaming history a lot of us grew up with and learned to edit/make games with. -
ModDB is leading the charge to save as many mods as we can. We all have until the end of the month to archive everything we might hold dear or miss in the future. It's a real shamge, I feel horrible knowing that I have only a short period of time to think hard about what I need for my older games. For anyone in need of assistance, I found the ghost of the old Filefront system which you can browse and find the stuff you want, then search for it via GameFront to see if it's still available for download. Remember, there's also the C&C Files section that will be going down, so please help preserve everything you can. Use things like online archives to access the rest of the Filefronts that are listed in the lower right sidebar of the one I just linked. Good luck to everyone with digital things to save! Many long-lost C&C mods could still be rescued. Spread the word out!

Define "much people"; Renegade X isn't doing too good on that part either if I recall (only one server is full most of the time), so it's somewhat better in that regard. That may be true but whatever the case, if people have fun working on it and want to work on a Renegade game instead of investing large amounts of time learning how to mod Renegade X and working with the UDK then that example is clear. Additionally, shutting down TSR development at this point would dishonor everyone who has worked on it up to this point because of the state the game is in and would also sabotage the people currently giving up a lot to see the game through. It is not just a matter of "OH HEY LETS SWITCH ENGINES" and there are so many factors to take into account both past and present that urge this topic not to show up again since most people just don't see all of the pieces of the puzzle and just how much time and energy it takes to do something like this. Everyone here is doing everything for free and out of their own free time. In conclusion, I'd wish anyone who doesn't know all of the aspects of such a move from W3D to RenX to stop bringing this up for the sake of both morale and not giving W3D Hub developers any more stress. Everyone here gives up a lot and I wish people would appreciate the amounts of work going on behind the scenes instead of bashing the old engine and poking at the switch engines topic. That kind of approach can be very demoralizing for any team, especially since it has been talked about over and over and over and over again. To make it clear, this is not a criticism towards anyone, this is just my take on the matter for everyone who stumbles here to see and take in. Enjoy TSR and be happy that it's still going strong after a decade (games usually sadly shut down after a few years!). Anything extra is an option that cannot be properly achieved at this time without damaging TSR or the team in some way. So hope for the best in the future but be reasonable about it and considerable and respectful to the people making the efforts. On a side note, I bet people would cry about it not being UE4 if TSR made a UDK version because that's how people are unfortunately. So lets put this topic to a rest already.

I've unfortunately had to stop making these some time ago but I'm planning on eventually getting back to doing them sometime in the near future if everything goes well IRL.

I've only scratched the surface of all things 3D up to now, but I watched yesterday's stream for quite a bit. Very informative and not at all boring in any way, so a heartfelt thank you for providing a wealth of info and putting it all into practices for us to see. I got cut off by a surprise Twitch screen green-out-then-BSOD but hey it was getting late in Europe anyway. I really appreciate when you explain some tricks which save up a lot of work time that you've learned through experience. Wrote some stuff down too!

Considering you are making a Fjord-inspired spiritual successor map, I assume it will go under a new name to avoid confusion? Have you thought about what to call it?
-
Please don't make it too dark. Maybe experiment with something a bit lighter than how Hostile Waters looked like? Just after sundown perhaps (if it can't be a daytime thing), maybe more stylized and blueish? In any case, it's entirely your call so good luck!
-
Fjord re-imagining with lots of urban features then?
-
I guess that's the most reasonable course of action for you; since most people want Fjord and APB lacks in urban settings, then why not expand on the Fjord idea and reimagine it into a new map with a new name and quite ideally with a central strategic location which has an assortment of close by houses or some sort of structures like that. We really could use some sort of town setting where people could run into and around buldings, flank tanks at a crossroads and things like that. I know we have at least a few house and barn models in APB and I doubt anyone would mind if multiples of the same structure were included provided the environment was mixed with misc objects and at least made to look a bit different. Multiple infantry movement paths within a village would add a great new spin on gameplay since we could effectively guerilla-style enemy tanks if you were to make a funneling path through the village as something like a lone road leading from the two bases. Sounds like a good concept to please everyone! Oh and more dense forrest areas would be a great addition to the village concept if you're going that route. Not too much but just a pinch of a more infantry friendly forest area would be great so vehicles can't run us over that easily. Just a thought for say a side path where vehicle movement could be limited. EDIT: Some vertical combat options from a ladder added to the lighthouse model or something higher beside the village would be great too for snipers and such! (depends on how you want to make the setting)
-
Why not a map with a town in the middle that exports oil? If you add in some taller buildings it could make for some interesting urban gameplay which I personally haven't seen yet.
-
Fixed. I could have sworn I checked that already.

Reinstalled the launcher after a windows 7 reinstall and now TSR won't full screen itself for some odd reason. The game window is always dragable across both of my displays. Any advice?

This looks so fresh and cool! Almost like isometric pixel RPG sprites.
