  1. Thanks Racks, i'll give it a go!
  2. I didn't think W3D had reflective textures tbh... i was under the impression it had to be a Specular map which Aircraftkiller advised me to forget about. Would you be able to explain in more detail? Would i have to seperate the parts of the mesh i want to be shiny? or would it better to make the whole thing shiny? What do you think would be best ?
  3. Thanks a lot guys! I really appreciate the comments and advice. I was actually using a picture of an F117 as a reference... I think the hardest part of texturing it was trying to achevie a smooth shiny surface and still give it detail...
  4. Hey All, So it's been an interesting experience, trying to learn 3D modelling, texturing etc.. So far i've come up with the following: It's supposed to have a smooth, "Stealth" texture like the F117 Stealth fighter. It's my first real attempt at texturing.. Definitely the hardest thing i've tried yet PS I haven't textured the tracks yet, as i'm hoping there will be a tutorial regarding that as i'm pretty sure it needs to be done slightly different.
  5. I look forward to it... RA2 is my favourite from the series... So i REALLY want to play this..
  6. lol it's a well used symbol to signify "power to the people"
  7. Hey, So another thread.. I dont know if there will be a texturing tutorial in the tutorials section, and if there is it'd be nice if it were made public so i can stop tearing my hair out Basically i've been reading all day about texturing and it's still as clear as mud. I have a few questions and it'd be much appreciated if you guys could help me out a bit. I realise that this stuff probably comes across as absolutely n00bish: Normal Mapping: Is this done in 3ds max or photoshop? I can't really find a consensus on this. Specular mapping - can someone explain this nicely and simply? Is it just something you can do in photoshop and apply to your UVW unwrap? Ambient occlusion - Yeah... this... again, can someone explain it simply? Is this also something that is done in Photoshop? Diffuse mapping - As above? Can someone explain it simply? Is this also done in photoshop?
  8. O_o lol you just said best practises don't matter here... Then provided a better practise... Thanks for the advice though it's appreciated
  9. This debate could go in circles forever. W3D is old, inferior to UDK and full of holes. We all know it, but as said before we like it. It's not an unhealthy attachment, we just like it. Sometimes things just have a certain charm to them, regardless of age or functionality. It comes down to opinion, and that's something that can't be disputed. RE backwards compatibility; Network Protocols haven't changed in years and i very much doubt they will. Even if they did, it wouldn't be hard to build an in-between client to make it work. Also, There will always be middleware solutions that enable backwards compatbility. (virtualXP for example). If we're all still interested in holding onto W3D in distant future, i'm almost certain it will be possible one way or another.
  10. Hey Dan, It doesn't make sense to me. The game's industry is massive, and very profitable. The UK has always been at the forefront as well... In my eyes, we should be paying our game devs decent money. I guess it's because they know people will do it for less?
  11. Obviously a UDK/UE4 version would not be ready tomorrow. It takes up to 2-3 years to have something playable... which my guess is the lifespan W3D has left. There's no need to abandon W3D. But it would be wise to have something ready for when the curtain falls on W3D. Where'd you get this figure from? Why will w3d only be "alive" for another few years? Just interested in how you got to this information?
  12. Yeah i'm from the UK so i'm working in GBP too. AircraftKiller, Thanks for the information, but even 40,000 USD would be too low to cover my bills etc...that's like 25K GBP I make 45,000 GBP and i still dont live as comfortably as i like... I live pretty close to London and the cost of living is ridiculous so it's all relative i suppose That's (your wage) near enough a senior artist/manager level wage in the industry, but I've heard that lead artists, producers and such make up to around £55k It takes a while to get there though! To be honest, even though the pay may be low, the fact that my job is to play video games and find bugs makes it not feel like a job at all. Hey OWA, I'm a manager in my field, I don't have much room for progression anymore. Like I said, I would take a paycut to do a job I potentially would love... Money isn't what drives me... I just don't feel like going into arrears, either that or I move back in with my mum
  13. No income tax... Wow. How do I sign up?? Flordia sounds amazing
  14. Thanks Moonsense, That helps a lot!
  15. Hello Moonsense, Yeah i did the actual unwrap, i guess i'm just wondering what the best practises are... I'll wait for the tutorial section to be opened to the public... How long will that be may i ask?
  16. Yeah i'm from the UK so i'm working in GBP too. 17. I know there is a tutorial section coming, but i have a question that i'd like to ask RE UVW Unwrapping: If you have a tank with multiple objects (chassis, turret, Barrell etc) do you UVW unwrap each one seperately? Or do you some how combine them all into one unwrap? If so how do you do that?
  18. Thanks for the advice guys... I feel like you should get paid WAY more than that :\ You guys are creating great things and with the massive technical know how that's required, the pay should reflect that!! Truthfully 15K-22K wouldn't even cover my mortgage payments... well it would but i wouldn't be left with much after. Don't take that the wrong way, i'm not taking the piss out of your wages as i would genuinely take a pay cut to do something that i love but Realistically i couldn't take a paycut of that magnitude!
  19. Hey, So i was wondering. Is a degree or above entirely necessary to enter the games development world? Watching that interview with OWA he mentioned he had a masters (nice work ). Also how is the pay? I dont want specifics, i'm just wondering if it would be anything near what i'm on now...
  20. I can relate to that mauler. I have fun tinkering with stuff
