CALLING ALL TRANSLATORS (IA String Translation Thread)

Good Evening all. IA has boosted over 40 players daily and has become quite possibly the last hold out for Renegade in the world of today. What originally started as a prime game played in the United States has become a game modded and loved by those worldwide. With this said, there are many players that come from various countries and would like to enjoy a game in their native language. To date and to the best of my knowledge there is no translation files supported for IA, however with your help we can change that and in-turn create multiple language supported versions of IA. With the popularity of the W3DHub Language translation topic taking off I believe we can implement it into our games.

I have pulled the string files from IA and have all the names of the various weapons, characters and vehicles as typed below. I am asking for the help of anyone to translate from their language to the game. I would preferably like to start off with Spanish and move on from there. Before posting translations below I would like to note a couple things.

1. I have provided numbers and different sections. When posting your translations simply post it in format like this. Also provide the language you're translating please as I will have multiple languages that I will be typing into files. The idea of breaking it into different numbers or sections allows different people to work on the same language (Like spanish) at the same time on different parts. Before translating I would post ( I am translating section 2..) and then edit it to include the translations so that others know to leave that part alone.

2. If you would like to type it in Word or already have some data typed up then please attach it by file and don't worry about formating or posting it into this topic. The formatting on the forums isn't the best for something like this anyways so I would recommend using google docs if you'd like.

3. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT AT THIS TIME CUSTOM LETTERING (RUSSIAN CYRLIC LETTERS OR LETTERS SUCH AS Ö Ü) ARE NOT SUPPORTED AT THIS TIME. WHAT THIS MEANS IS THAT YOU'LL HAVE TO READ YOUR LANGUAGE WITHOUT THESE LETTERS. IF YOUR LANGUAGE USES A LOT OF CUSTOM LETTERING OR ALL OF IT AND IT BECOMES UNREADABLE/UNTRANSLATABLE IT CANNOT BE FIXED OR INPUT CORRECTLY AT THIS TIME. IF YOUR LANAUGE (Such as German) USES SOME CUSTOM LETTERING BUT IS STILL WIDELY READABLE THEN PLEASE POST TRANSLATIONS.

 

4. IA at the moment has 10 string files all of which are different and similar at the same time. I will have to mix/match through trial and error to see which files change what. This may take some time to do even after you post your translation. Please bear with me. I understand typing this stuff is alot of work and I would do it myself but alas I cannot. Thank you for any help and any contributions.

 

5. I have tried to shorten as much as I could to shorten the list. For example instead of putting in GDI AA Specialist and Nod AA Specialist I have simply just put one of them in. So while some things may look like they are missing from GDI or Nod side the words are shared actually and can be used for both. Furthermore I don't think there is a translation for CZ-75 so I am leaving it like that unless told otherwise.

I can speak Spanish but I cant write it or type it and google has a typed translator thing as well

Hey Threve, I took the Launcher translation sheet and added a tab to it for IA. Other tabs can be added for the other W3D games as well when needed/asked for. You can add your English strings to the "en" column and translate will pick up the rest, then volunteers can make edits where necessary.

I think, this is pretty readable when you install fonts with cyrillic letters, I have no problem with it. The only thing is... can the new engine broadcast those through Internet as usual? As far as I know, the original Renegade can do it, and people can easily go and play multiplayer games with cyrillic letters. There are few translations of Renegade already available, and I bought one from a shop over 12 years ago, it is still in my collection of CDs and DVDs.

Well after the other day Threve and I discuss rather I can scale down the category of the string file for IA. I can do and can start a clean up process to optimize and scale down the string file so you may know which and which to edit easier

However this may require some time for me to sort it out and it may affect certain units strings file. I can scale it down to 9 category.

  • GDI Faction ( All units )
  • Nod Faction ( All Units )
  • 3rd ( faction, Forgotten, Civilian and so on )
  • IA Weapon
  • IA Ultility ( such as Tier naming, and so on )
  • Additional Purchase Terminal, Barrier, Barricades, Research, Construction Options
  • Flora & Fauna, random object names
  •  Map, certain location naming district ( reserved for future build )
  • ( reserved ) I need a 9th one for something.

This is simply not possible to realistically accomplish with the ways IA is set up. The PT icons have their text on the image themselves, the kill messages are generated server side, and there are many other ingame textures that contain text as well.

PT icons and textures are very problematic, sure. The one solution is to make few versions of each texture which has a text on it, and when players choose their language, use only those which are appropriate for their language. This update gonna take weeks... better to translate names of units first.

In case of strings, you can easily replace texts dynamically and send them to each player manually, but this of course requires another update that also needs to be tested as well.

It is possible albeit a very big pain in the ass. As Yap said earlier he is cleaning up the strings file which will help out and it should be noted that since the kill messages are generated server side they may not display correctly. However.. "Player left the game" , every unit name and basically the whole game can still be modded so while it's not a %100 translation I think people can settle for 98%. In addition I will edit the PT Icons when a fully translated string file presents itself as I will know it will be worth the time/effort.

I'm unsure. Those servers may have been custom servers. To my knowledge and understanding here is how it works and hopefully this will clear up any confusion anyone has. (This will also be aimed at @Kaskins who asked earlier about fonts ).

So, the strings can all be easily changed with the string editor I've included in the file download from another topic. When people post their language up I will edit the string files in IA to reflect it and in-turn every single vehicle/text based object will be displayed in said language. The language translated will have to be (at the moment) in these characters abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz1234567890-=_+[{]};:'"<>,./?`~!@#$%^&*()

Basically the standard english keyboard layout. This results in a couple of things that do not work in our favor.

The languages translated will have to be using these characters otherwise they will not load on the server or work. The reason for this is that the server uses scripts to determine what characters can be utilized. As said earlier for most servers they are using the letters abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz1234567890-=_+[{]};:'"<>,./?`~!@#$%^&*()  Another problem that we run into is that you can only use a certain number of custom lettering. As pushwall displayed in another topic for APB and in the picture shown you can only use about 40 or so custom letter "Spots". 

So say you replace the custom lettering spots with Chinese lettering and then set the server scripts (by convincing the server owner to update said scripts) so that they display them. You probably don't have enough "Custom letter spots" to display all the chinese characters and you also don't have any leftover to add Russian Lettering/Any other language you fancy. The result of all of this is that IA at the moment cannot display custom characters other than listed above and even if we added custom letters there is not enough "room" on the font file to make every language work. 

However what can work is changing the strings to match other languages that don't use alot of custom lettering and also change the PT icons as well (which I will do myself).

There are no official patches for Renegade, except six languages, so there are of course some changes to make other localizations work.

Stylemgr.ini and Strings.tdb are key files for the program "Renegade" to play singleplayer games.

For "SSGM" you only need to replace the necessary strings with text for each joining player through engine call "Change_String_Player", after this action no modified strings.tdb required for client, only modified Stylemgr.ini.

That would awesome. As Jeod posted earlier, I transferred everything above into that google document so you can work on it that way if you’d like. (It’s a lot more organized way of translating imo).

Custom letters are still not supported, right? I'm translating without including special characters for now. It won't be much of a problem for Turkish. I can correct them later if any progress can be made about this issue.

You guys put so much work into this project and I love how supportive Renegade community is <3 Thank you all!

The Turkish translation is done, but there was a little disagreement between me and @MasterCan (The Unstoppable). He thinks that translating words like Black Hand, Obelisk of Light sounds weird and funny, since we're used to hearing those words only in English. He says that those words should be kept in their original forms. He laughed at my translation (I'm kind of mad about this if you're reading here master >:( ) while it is exactly translated like that even in the official C&C websites. I think the purpose of localization is to make players feel like they're playing a game made by their own nation. I understand that those translated words may sound weird to Turkish players who are used to playing in English. But it takes time to get familiar with new words. Our national language association sometimes makes changes and says "From now on, we're gonna use this Turkish blabla word instead of that foreign gloo gloo word, ok?" Everyone laughs at those words at first but then it starts to catch on among people and it becomes the main word. There are of course some too  ridiculous words that isn't accepted by public. But I don't think the second thing is the case here in my translation.  There are also some other disagreements that I won't get into.

Now, the translation is done but some of the words are translated into Turkish and some of them are in their English form. To be honest, it's a little bit of a botch job. In order to avoid any misunderstanding, I'm definitely not blaming MasterCan as he said it's up to me what to do in the end and maybe he's the right one. Also, I'm the one who asked him to take a look a the translation as I thought it would better to have it proofread by someone who is familiar with the game. So, I'm just merely describing the situation. I thought I should let you guys decide what to do as you're the developers of this game mod. You can publish this translation as the way it is or we can make changes or you don't have to publish it at all. Sorry to make this thing turn into an issue. I'm actually a translator in real life maybe that's why I'm a little bit obsessed about this :D

I loved it how you proofed evidence for BEDOs innocence when he was accused to AGT roof nuke on Rencorner Lol 

And to topic: I agree with you, like when I install Renegade with original language settings (in my case german) it says "GDI Wachturm Typ 2" instead of AGT or Nod Kraftwerk instead of Power Plant. So imho you re fine with turkish names.

I think he is either a kid or (high probably) a teenager. I couldn't ask him his age in order not to sound condescending. I'm not that much of an adult either. But even a couple of years age gap can make a difference in maturity. So maybe we shouldn't take it too seriously, I don't know 🤷 But I'm still going to remind him that. He should be aware of his responsibilities no matter how old he is as the sense of responsibility is acquired at young age.

Hahaha it makes me happy seeing that someone recognizes one of my (rare) finest works in Renegade, thank you!😃I guess I got my skills from my dad <3.  But unfortunately this time the work I've done here isn't satisfactory. I'm not happy with the result. This isn't about master. I think I haven't made that good of a job myself and this feels kind of humiliating as a translator. In fact now I'm doubting my translation, lol. But the thing is there isn't really a Turkish community here while for example Russian community seems hardcore and talented. Even I won't be able to play here anymore due to my storage problems (poopy laptop >:( ). I don't think there is any Turkish player left (at least not anyone that I'm aware of) to translate the game for. So this won't really matter. Well, I think I'm done here. I just apologize if I let down anyone. But still I'm going to say my catchphrase which may be known by some people :D It's something? So I congratulate for myself for trying and give myself A+ for effort!

 To not to go off topic: Thank you all (except me hah :D) for contributing to make this game available for everyone. I envy you all.

@GraYaSDFI talked to him and didn't mention the "You are fired" part :D He says that "I find Commando Assault very creative and interesting. I just don't have the time. I'm have my own projects too that I'm currently working on. But of course I'm working on those models as well when I'm available. I never leave things unfinished. Even 5 years may pass, but I will still come back to look into it and do it. MasterList is the biggest example of that."

Well, I am not going to write off topic much, just I have to say that project may die because of delays (if this will happen, any versions of CA should be removed from public). It does not matter who is working on it and how, just a reminder, he-he.

It's such a shame that a project may die due to delays and lack of communication. A project that was put so much work into like that deserves a chance to live. I told MasterCan to contact you on discord. I believe that you can work out this problem. Maybe you'll see that things are not so bad and project will be alright? Let's hope so...

Wow. A lot of info. I’m about to check now and work on porting the Turkish translation to APB/I.A. Thank you to everyone’s help so far. Will post updates as they come along. It won’t be as simple as typing it in due to the fact i’ll Need to also recreate the PT icons to reflect them in Turkish.

Wow. A lot of info. I’m about to check now and work on porting the Turkish translation to APB/I.A. Thank you to everyone’s help so far. Will post updates as they come along. It won’t be as simple as typing it in due to the fact i’ll Need to also recreate the PT icons to reflect them in Turkish.

If you give me the necessary textures (PT, gameplay objects, units, signs, etc.) with empty strings and with english strings, I can do it for russian people as well. I have Photoshop with DDS and TGA plugins installed, I used it in far past to make Chemical Tank and other features, it is still working.

Wow I didn't expect it to be implemented so soon. Yesterday I felt guilty and corrected some of the translations that MasterCan changed and some of mine D: I hope I wasn't too late to do that. I think it looks better now. But that's okay if it's already implemented. @Threve Thank you so much for your effort. I would help you too if I knew what to do with those icons. But I don't unfortunately :( I swear this is my last post. I'm done and I won't post anything else, lol 🤐

That sounds awesome and would really help out. I’ll talk with Yap about getting you the template (if he still has it) if not we will figure it out.

not a problem! Thank you for your very hard work. I can put the changes in there to have our first IA language version. As for the PT Icons. Basically i’m Going to get a template/picture of the original one, retype it all in Turkish and paste the tanks on it so all the Icons are in Turkish. The icons are basically pictures (a texture) as where the language translation is a different file. So I have to do them desperate. Again, awesome work and feel free to change/update as needed.

I've worked with dds files before for a different game and what you say sounds doable for me. I think I could help you out too if that's okay for you.
