  1. Its possible then that these are two different types of issues. If your ping is high, it can mean that your network (or ISP) is crowded or "bottlenecked" at the moment. Traffic will get processed, just at a slower than ideal pace (but not dropped). Ping would then jump up because it is in fact working, albeit slowly. However the "gauge" so to speak that ping is, tends to break when packet loss is the problem, which is what I described earlier. Basically in that case, it shows the same as a normal ping because it did not receive a value during the connection drop and doesn't have a display value for not receiving an ICMP ACK packet (or whatever it uses for its pinging system), so it just continues to display the last value it received. I hope I'm making sense.....and again, this is guesswork. I have a networking degree, not a W3D engine degree, so I could be totally off here. It does line up though. EDIT: I like how the forum recognizes "ACK" as aircraftkiller In context, thats an "acknowledgement" packet, sent in response to a SYN (synchronize) packet.
  2. Correct. He also did the theme for the James Bond - Casino Royale movie
  3. Okhe. Here's a few of my favorites, although it was really hard to only choose three.... (I realize that the last one is by AiC, but Chris is in it too, along with several other awesome seattle voices of the time.)
  4. Ping is done in packets and as such requires a connection to update, just like other types of traffic. In other words, if a connection drops intermittently, the game's ping function will be affected just like the game or anything else utilizing the constant connection. If his connection drops and stays out for a couple seconds, then reconnects, it won't necessarily change his ping rate on screen because the ping packets got dropped just like all the other traffic. Judging by how renegade handles player and vehicle movement in this scenario, it likely displays the last successful ping until it receives the next ping reply from another one and updates the value. Just a guess (but I do have a networking degree ).
  5. I was saddened and dismayed this morning when I opened facebook, to see a post by Frank Klepacki commenting on the death of Chris Cornell last night. If you don't know who this guy is, then you are likely not very old or just don't much like rock music, because he was only in about half a dozen different bands during the 90s and 2000s (soundgarden, temple of the dog, audioslave just to name a few). He is well known for his amazing voice and talent. The music world has definitely taken a loss today.
  6. Sounds like that file is corrupted. Likely caused by the disk being full at one point. Delete that file and try again and it should download a fresh copy.
  7. Right, so those were likely US players.
  8. Typically US and EU afternoon and evenings are pretty busy.
  9. You said he's running windows 7 right? If thats the case, then he can get 90% up to date all in one go by downloading the appropriate package here. Its like a service pack, but not quite, and it contains many many updates that would have to otherwise be downloaded through the buggy update system. This is hours (possibly days) quicker than letting windows update do its "thing" and is ideal for slow connections, as long as it doesn't drop out a lot. Let us know if we can help in any other way!
  10. Awesome Thanks for that handy translation! I guess the quickest solution would probably be to clear your system restore points and run disk cleanup! If you need assistance doing those things, just let me know!
  11. Ah i didnt catch that. I am on a phone though
  12. Alright, tell him to go into the aforementioned package-cache\games\apb folder and delete the file that its failing on. In this case it looks like its the always.patch.3.0.8.0.zip.
  13. Thats good, at least we can rule that out. This is a bit of a shot in the dark, as I cant read the errors.log as well as danpaul could, but try this for me: Go in that package-cache folder (i think) and delete the dependencies folder. It may not be in that folder (im away from my PC so im going from memory) but check it out and then try to install as admin again. Let us know what happens please
  14. Nah man, Raap already got it. Its "The Woods Today".
  15. Hey, why don't we reintroduce tech levels to force the use of infantry at the beginning of the match? Bring back the downvote button on the forums too. Let your hate flow, I can feel it now!
  16. Thats a complicated subject. It isn't completely ours to decide what to do with. While I suppose we could publish some bits of it (only the parts that our staff or the TT guys have written themselves), the engine itself is copyrighted by EA. They would totally spank us if we got into posting code for some of their IP, even if it isn't theirs. Its a sticky subject to say the least. Now why they care about nearly 15-year old engine code? I have no idea... In short, its just not something we can easily do unfortunately.
