[blurb]AR December Update[/blurb]

index.php?app=core&module=attach&section

Welcome to the DecembAR update! New soldiers join our roster!

Note: Click images for big.

Allied G.I.

Out with the old GDI Soldier placeholder, in with the new and complete Allied GI! Modeled, textured, and finally in-game, the Allied GI is ready for some action! Created by @One Winged Angel and @Romanov together, the GI makes up the core of the Allied infantry. For close quarters combat, GIs are armed with the MPK5. Taking a more defensive position, GIs may also deploy a protective ring of sandbags around them and open fire with the FN Minimi Para.

The Allied GI marks another completion to the RA2:AR infantry roster, as well as a huge milestone for the team. It feels great in-game, it's fitting of the Red Alert 2 style, and just looks badass.

"Squared away, sir!"

Soviet Desolator

Hailing from Soviet-aligned Iraq, the infamous Desolator makes his appearance! Equipped with the dangerous rad-cannon and protected by his radiation suit, the Desolator is a potent anti-infantry unit. Firing a concentrated beam of radiation from the shoulder-mounted rad-cannon, the Desolator can melt away enemy personnel and wipe out entire squads. Additionally, the Desolator can deploy his rad-cannon and make a toxic environment for the enemy. While having to be immobile to do so, a deployed Desolator offers area-of-denial, forcing the enemy to rethink their advances.

"There goes the neighborhood!"

New Team Member!

True to our word of always hiring new team members, @devilslayersbane has recently been hired onto our staff. Given the task to produce a new Portable Flak Cannon, devilslayersbane set out to do just that and presented our Soviet Flak Trooper with a new toy. Project Leads One Winged Angel and moonsense715 were thoroughly impressed and had to show us internally for opinions and thoughts. Needless to say, we absolutely approved of it and welcomed him aboard with open arms.

Official joining as a Modeler, devilslayersbane will be a valuable addition to the Apocalypse Rising team and to our W3D Hub staff.

"This gun's heavy."

Allied War Factory Internal

moonsense715 continues to work diligently on our buildings and has further improved the Allied War Factory, both internally and externally. It's but a few textures away from being complete, and yet moonsense has made amazing progress on this visually appealing structure.

"Vehicle ready."

Awesome new infantry textures.

I tend to think of the rad-cannon as a step up from the tesla cannon

Simply because the desolator irradiates his targets instead of just frying them.

Although both are beam weapons.

Zapping infantry wasn't enough. Melting infantry into radioactive goo is where it's at.

You're going to love how this game sounds. I've been very careful to stay as close to RA2 as possible while still providing some enhancements. I even managed to include some of the original engine sounds in a few cases; namely the Mirage Tank and the Siege Chopper.

IS this still on W3D engine? Aren't you pushing the textures too much? Or is it the other way around with this engine? it handles textures well but not Polygons?

I love the look of that G.I model. He has the characteristic Renegade derp face.

Oh yes...

But everything looks so neat that I can't wait to try this someday! But a question (though I assume for the sake of balance) that the Desolator deploy ability won't affect team mates this time around?

Another thing that I wonder about, whilst the internal structures of this game look great and more 'expansive' I often worry whether or not it'll be more difficult to repair since you'd be running around the place trying to find the central hub? Or do these minor weak points also serve as a repair hub?

Minor weakpoints are points in buildings that disable the structure, much like killing it would, albeit without actually doing so. In exchange, there are repair nodes throughout both Allied and Soviet buildings that will let you repair just as fast as if you were repairing at an MCT, but not have the MCT's weakness to damage. That damage bonus goes for the major weak point, and if I'm wrong on any points, may the devs feel free to correct me on it.

I like this guy.

You're hired.

Sweet, can't wait to start testing

I think teammates will receive reduced damage or if possible be given radiation warning and a small timer of immunity but when that runs out they take full damage.

If friendlies are given full immunity I suspect the mechanic will be used abusively

Yes and no not really. Historically, W3D is not good with textures applied to high resolution meshes (if I remember correctly), but with more modern hardware, we can afford to throw the boat out a bit more on quality. Last time I looked, the typical infantry character in AR tends to have nearly double the polygons of the best looking infantry character in Reborn.

Another thing that I wonder about, whilst the internal structures of this game look great and more 'expansive' I often worry whether or not it'll be more difficult to repair since you'd be running around the place trying to find the central hub? To support what the other guys have said, I'll just quickly run through building objects in an easy-to-follow list.

  • Purchase Terminal - Buy your Infantry and Vehicles here.
  • Repair Node - Engineers and Technicians can use their tools on this object for a faster repair rate. The advantage of these nodes is that Engineers can repair the building safely without being gunned down by SEALs that are camping the Major Weakpoint/MCT.
  • Minor Weakpoint - Easy to Kill, disables the building until it is repaired.
  • Major Weakpoint - Hard to Kill, the building is destroyed when this is destroyed, much like MCTs in Renegade/APB/Reborn.

Just a small thing to add here, Engineers can kill minor weakpoints very quickly.

Sweet. I'd love to see this game.

When we're with the battle fortress, and it's heavily damaged, will it look like this?
