I share the feeling that "he was in RA1 so don't take him out". Would it hurt anything to simply make changes to the other roles as suggested (a limited number of non-AT 'nades) but leave the grenadier in as well?
-
So much better.

Interesting thoughts. The Grenadier is definitely one that has always been hard to "nail down" in my mind, concerning a role. Speaking of the "great rocket soldier debate", I like how after such a fuss was made, to the point that the game was actually changed because of it, the person that wanted the change hasn't been back! Just an observation.

Question What Operating System do you use?

GREAT SCOTT!!! -
You're welcome Really though, nice idea bringing this over here. I might not participate in the discussion, but I too like history a great deal and certain things in the "lore" of C&C had bothered me a bit as well. I enjoyed reading the discussion and I hope it continues.

OWAPC Ok, I'll stop spamming now. LET THE LYNCHING RESUME!

Very carefully. [...] I like to imagine that OWA was physically an APC that somehow was able to talk and communicate with humans and that's iLikeToSnipe hanging out of the back end there. Yeah I was going for that too... Oh well. @Fraydo, you need to help me figure out how to get this ThomasTheTankEngine-looking APC image out of my head now..... Creepy isn't even the word.

I don't want this to come off as an abrupt "NO!" because thats not how I mean what I'm about to say at all. I'm just going to summarize (nicely) the past 3-4 WARS discussions that have already been had on this exact topic. It isn't feasible at this point to do what you're suggesting. The main reasons being that 1.) the Renegade X engine simply was not constructed for this type of gameplay (nor was any other engine aside from W3D for that matter) and 2.) when the games have come this far on the W3D engine already, switching engines would likely re-create all the hurdles we've overcome thus far. Don't get me wrong - there are benefits to using other engines as opposed to the odd bird that is W3D. But W3D is "home" to our devs. Its what they know and its what they're comfortable with. If the people we have developing our games don't want to all but completely start over just to make some things more visually appealing, and at the cost of years more time....I can't think of why anyone would blame them for sticking with the W3D platform. We do want the games to get finished after all. Moving engines would likely keep that from ever happening, just because of the amount of change and the amount of time that it would take to properly do it all. I do not want to discourage any of you reading this from going out on your own on a different engine and making an awesome C&C game! If you have the power to do it, then by all means do it! But the general feeling here is that we will (at least for now) stick with W3D.

Our army ordered a bunch of birthday suits?? Nice.

Alstar, you should have entered those into the hostile waters screenshot contest, they look pretty nice!

awwWWWW SNAP

Yes, and we do like for everyone to invite their friends to play. The main difficulty is selling them on our rather "niche" games. It seems like that if I ever manage to get my friends ingame, they get frustrated when its more complicated than "point and click". C&C mode is a foreign concept to most But yes I'll agree, we do need more players as thats the only way to keep these games alive.

I wouldn't classify "people leaving" or even ragequit as a problem per se. It happens in all games. Thus I don't personally feel that we should alter game mechanics to make up for it happening. I've never seen this done on any other game, probably because there are better ways to balance a game. Balancing is already a nightmare, and thats only coming from my perspective as a tester. Its much much worse from the devs' perspective, having all those numbers to contend with and then even when the numbers make sense, having to deal with how it "feels" based on potentially shoddy feedback from blokes like you and me. Its a huge achievement when something truly gets balanced. What you're proposing would require a number of balance possibilities equal to the number of possible player v player combinations.....I think I can hear pushwall saying "nope".
-
Auto-teaming on join has been a thing since the game's inception. The only possible way (that I'm aware of) to have numbers that badly stacked is for there to already be like 5v6 or 6v6 and then people leave, leaving 3v6. Otherwise check for spies, as these will make the numbers appear skewed. And until the rank system can do much much more than it currently does, I don't think that forcing team swaps would be a feasible thing to do. And even then probably not because it would absolutely piss me and probably others if that were to happen mid-match. Let me give a scenario: The match is 6v6, I'm in my phase tank, rocking out, destroying your base, got 6000 creds in the bank, life is good. I and my team destroy your ref and your barr and steal most of your credits with thieves in the process so your team is pretty screwed. Then half of your team ragequits! What happens now with the auto balancer?? Well it forcefully takes me from my phase tank and puts me on the other team! Now after all that hard work, I'm on the team who's got the base that I just helped destroy....And on top of that, it was such a close match points-wise. So when I move teams, taking all my points with me, it tips the scale and now the team with the dead base is winning by points! Think about this carefully. I realize that this is a bit of a "tall tale" example but its a possible scenario. For the reasons given here and many more I'm sure, forcing team change mid-match does not make sense. Feel free to contest my thoughts...

Save the mine layer for one of the later reinforcement waves then?

Exactly. And if something goes awry, I can get support for a paid program much easier than I can get it for a freebie in most cases. Which is good because as you hinted, my own hide is on the line. -

Simple. Because startisback is made better and has more capability. I realize that isn't for everyone, and by all means try them all to see what you like. Classic shell is good too, I just prefer startisback. In my line of work, its easier to sell someone (referring to a business that I would do service work for) on a software that has professional options (such as volume licensing) and is more configurable, rather than a free program. Lots of businesses don't see something you don't have to pay for as being worth using and will often times simply write free stuff off without looking into them. They can't see past the "free" stereotype. Speaking from experience. We're not talking about folks that care enough to learn anything about what they're using or could use, tech-wise. They just want to pay someone to make it work as simply as possible, and if you tell them "oh yeah here's this free thing" then they might write you off too lol. But yeah, there are a ton of programs that fall into this category. Classic shell would probably fall in as #2 in my mind. -

(From my PC tech standpoint) I suggest at least upgrading with a temporary install so that you get your free upgrade before this coming July when that promotional offer ends. You can just make a temp install to get your PC registered and then go back to using 7 or 8.1 until you're ready to move to 10. Its worth it I promise. And for you folks that must have the windows 7 start menu (myself included), this software is worth every penny! http://startisback.com/ Extremely configurable with cool stuff that far surpasses the standard menu if you like that type thing. If not, then you can just have a plain old win7 menu. Enjoy! -
nah mang. You're right the opposite IMO. I think everyone will agree when Hostile Waters gets into the normal rotation

Might need at least a couple flame towers to replace the coil. Its literally the only "gate keeper" for the tunnels and the front entrance.

Balance APB Delta patch balance discussion

Am I late for the e-penis contest??? I didn't mean to derail this into a "who's done more impressive impossible sounding stuff with C4" thread. To answer Raap's question (not sure if serious), I don't think they should be nerfed honestly. They take like 5 seconds I believe to do the refill so if you're caught then you're screwed anyway. I like it the way it is. -
And I've collected nearly all of them!
